Whether you've read an Archie comic or are a complete novice to Archie Andrews and his hapless shenanigans, Riverdale feels familiar. Maybe it's the suburban setting, a seemingly wholesome town where football players and pretty cheerleaders converge every Friday night for the big game. Or perhaps it's the teen angst, vexing and delectable. Or the characters themselves, recognizable in every teen archetype in modern pop culture. Who is Dawson Leery if not a neurotic, blond Archie?

We've all heard arguments against public displays of affection: It's inappropriate, distasteful or even flat-out " gross. But that discomfort is exactly the reason PDA is so important — and why it can be a powerful tool to break down societal perceptions. This story, a small flashpoint in Jewish and queer theatrical history, has long fascinated the playwright Paula Vogel and the director Rebecca Taichman, who trace the origins of the play and the ensuing scandal in a tender, unconventional tribute, Indecent, now at the Vineyard Theater.
