By Terri Mapes. Scandinavians are an open-minded lot, and this includes Swedes. This means you'll find a number of nude beaches or topless sunbathers throughout the country. Nudism in Sweden is nothing unusual, and Swedes make it clear that the purpose of nudism and naturism is strictly non-sexual.

There have, though, been times when the people of Stockholm have not been universally accepting of an idea and where people have questioned whether something should exist or be on display. A recent example is the subway art by Liv Stromquist , which featured a variety of cartoon images, including women menstruating, and hairy men. Many in Stockholm felt that it was a striking and thought-provoking art installation. Others were not so sure, with some feeling it was too graphic and inappropriate. Stockholm might often be presented as some sort of hip, progressive and cool hive mind, but not everyone is in agreement on all things.

There are innumerable possibilities to take a swim in the nude in Sweden since there are such a lot of lakes and rivers and that the coast is very long with thousands of islands and isles. Also the country is sparsely inhabited in relation to southern and central Europe. Despite this, we have defined a lot of nude beaches. Some are official or municipal nude beaches and others are just used by naturists and other people as a suitable beach for nude bathing. Some beaches are supervised by the local naturist association to ensure tidyness and and comfort and in order to avoid unwanted attention by single men etc.
