About a year and a half ago, I spotted a small cluster of red bumps around my nostrils and chin. At the time I was 28, which put me squarely in the middle of the demographic for perioral dermatitis, a condition that most commonly strikes women between the ages of 15 and 45, peaking in their 20s and 30s. Children can develop the condition, too. The symptoms of perioral dermatitis include flesh-colored or red bumps that circle your mouth and sometimes your nose, as in my case. The bumps can also show up around your eyes and even around your vagina or rectum, in which case the condition is called periorificial dermatitis.

What You Need to Know About Perioral Dermatitis, an Annoying Red Face Rash
Perioral dermatitis is an inflammatory rash involving the skin around the mouth. The rash may spread up to the nose or even the eyes. It usually appears as a scaly or red bumpy rash around the mouth. There may be a clear fluid discharge. Redness and slight itching and burning can also occur.
Perioral dermatitis can cause an angry red rash to bloom around your mouth, seemingly out of nowhere, as if by terrible dermatological magic. This rash of small bumps is usually red in people with light skin and flesh-colored in people of color, according to the American Academy of Dermatology AAD. Eczema can manifest as a dry, itchy rash made up of red or brownish-gray patches, thickened, cracked, scaly skin, or small raised bumps that leak liquid and crust over when you scratch them. Perioral dermatitis usually appears around the mouth and in the folds of skin around your nose, though it can sometimes appear around your eyes and even around your genitals.
