Updated August 22, Stefansson's wife Steinunn Olina Thorsteinsdottir broke the news on social media in both Icelandic and English, saying he "passed away after battling aggressive bile duct cancer for two years. His earthly remains will be scattered in secrecy in a distant ocean," she wrote on Facebook. She also passed on the Stefansson's family's gratitude for the support he received over the years.
